Old Boys List
For the second straight year, the Vail RFC Old Boys will be joining with the Washington Poltroons
on a road-trip to New York City. Vail/Washington side will be taking on Les Vioux (Manhattan
RFC Old Boys) at Randall’s Island on May 3rd. Several ruggers have already committed to
represent Vail for this event. We will be staying at the Milford Plaza just off Time Square
in the heart of New York’s Theatre District. Schedule stops include dinner in Little Italy
and taking in a ballgame at Yankee Stadium as well as a tour of historic Manhattan drinking
establishments. We plan on departing Denver on Thursday May 1st, returning on either Sunday
or Monday. Hotel and airfares are reasonable.
The 5th annual Vail Old Boys Fest is tentatively scheduled for Saturday August 21st. This year,
we have been approached by the Vail Special Events Committee about possibly expanding the event,
as Vail is attempting to promote summer events and activities. A few members of the committee
caught last year’s event and were intrigued by a bunch of old guys playing this young man’s
game. It seems that the game is easier to follow and understand at the pace that we play at.
In addition, in these times of staunch competition for summer business, someone has finally
figured out that ruggers, both young and old, are good business, as we spend money in town
(mostly on beer) and attract some interesting characters. Interest for an expanded event is
not a concern, however availability of adequate pitches to accommodate a larger field of
participants for a one-day tourney is. We already have commitments from several Front Range
clubs including the Highlanders, Boulder, Harlequins and Colorado SOB’s. In addition, past
participants Washington Poltroons and Atlanta Old as well as clubs from New York, Phoenix,
Southern California and Vancouver have expressed interest in coming. If you have contacts
with any out-of-state clubs that may be interested in coming, please put them in touch with us.
As the old saying goes, “we would rather play rugby and lose then play softball and win”.
Well, we usually lose! In conjunction with Vail Realty, we will again be playing softball
in Vail in the very competitive ‘F’ League on Friday night. The games start in June and run
into late August. We play just long enough to keep us out of the bar for an hour or so.
Glove required. Fitness optional.
